Libretto only. The music was written by Henry Purcell (cf. New Grove). Libretto (based on Shakespeare's Midsummer night's dream) perhaps by E. Settle (cf. Loewenberg, A. Annals of opera, 1597-1940; Brown, F.C. Elkanah Settle, p. 95-96)

In this issue there are [6] preliminary pages: page [1], title page; page [2], blank; pages [3]-[4], preface; page [5], prologue; page [6], "The names of the persons."
Quire B in 2 settings. B1r, stage directions begin: setting 1) "Enter Duke", or setting 2) "Enter Quince". Quire G in 2 settings. G1r, line 4 has: setting 1) "flower", or setting 2) "Flower."

The title is stamped lengthwise in gilt on a black spine label. The armorial bookplate of the Barton Library is present on the front pastedown. An early, three-letter inscription is present on the title page. In this copy, B1r is in setting 1 and G1r is in setting 2. The preliminaries are bound in the following order: title page, prologue leaf, preface leaf. This copy is trimmed closely, with some losses to catchwords and signatures
Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copy G.4014.44 measures 23 cm and is halfbound in black morocco with the title stamped lengthwise along the spine. The armorial bookplate of the Barton Library is present on the front pastedown. A single sheet of bibliographical notes, in the hand of T.P. Barton, is bound-in before the title page. In this copy, B1r is in setting 1 and G1r is in setting 2. The preliminaries are bound in the following order: title page, preface leaf, prologue leaf. This copy is largely untrimmed
