The Oxford School Shakespeare is a well-established series which helps the reader to understand and enjoy Shakespeare's plays.

Each play in the series contains the complete and unabridged text, together with a wide range of notes. These include detailed and clear explanations of difficult words and passages, a synopsis of the entire plot, summaries of individual scenes, and notes on the main characters.

There are also line drawings and photographs to illustrate the notes and text, background information on Shakespeare's England, suggestions for further reading, a brief biography of Shakespeare, and a complete list of his plays.

Roma Gill, the series editor, has taught Shakespeare at all levels. She has acted in and directed Shakespeare's plays and has lectured on Shakespeare all over the world.

Work Description

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610–11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand.
